Learn how to use contemporary learning theories, authentic pedagogies, and effective assessment strategies to plan and deliver secondary mathematics lessons that inspire and empower your students. This online mathematics teaching course immerses you in the world of mathematics, exploring its nature, history, and philosophy, as well as its role in secondary education. Our expert instructor will introduce you to a range of effective mathematics teaching practices, with a spotlight on the Year 11 and Year 12 NSW Mathematics syllabuses and the Australian Curriculum, plus the development of content within the Number and Algebra strands of the K–10 syllabus.

To join this microcredential, you’ll need evidence of teacher accreditation.

You will also need easy access to a computer and the internet, basic computer literacy skills, and proficiency in English.

Who this course is for

Australian secondary teachers seeking to add an additional teaching area or become qualified to teach mathematics ‘in field’.

What you'll learn

You’ll learn how to:

  • investigate the primary-to-secondary school transition and analyse how mathematics, numeracy, and literacy interconnect in the classroom and the broader curriculum
  • reflect on mathematics learning processes within curriculum design
  • design inclusive and engaging learning activities and lesson sequences for students in Years 7–10 that enhance their understanding of mathematics
  • assess students' grasp of mathematical concepts
  • explore innovative strategies and ICT tools for teaching and assessing Stage 6 mathematics, focusing on differentiating the curriculum to meet diverse learner needs.

Course outcomes

On successful completion of this course, you'll get:

  • a digital microcredential badge
  • mastery of the NSW Mathematics 7–10 Syllabus or Australian Curriculum, including assessment and reporting, to craft effective learning sequences
  • the skills to design a Stage 6 Mathematics teaching program that applies essential concepts and structures
  • detailed knowledge of modern pedagogical models and how to use them to create dynamic activities that build foundational concepts, such as functions, from late Stage 3 to Stage 6
  • the ability to analyse and articulate key issues influencing secondary mathematics education in Australia for diverse learners.
  • two subject credits (16pts) into the Bachelor of Educational Studies.
