Numeracy and Mathematics Block-Based Assessment (NUMBBA)

There are no upcoming offerings for the year .

Early mathematics is foundational for later learning, participation and life opportunities, yet young children’s mathematical thinking in play is often missed. Many early childhood educators report limited confidence, knowledge and preparation to recognise, assess and extend mathematical thinking, particularly in play-based contexts and for children who face barriers to participation.

The Numeracy and Mathematics Block-Based Assessment (NUMBBA) is a valid and reliable formative assessment tool developed for play-based early childhood contexts. NUMBBA, together with its accompanying resources (including the NUMBBA block kit), provides a practical, evidence-based professional learning program designed to support educators to recognise, understand and respond to young children’s mathematical thinking.

With NUMBBA educators notice and capture how preschool-aged children build, arrange, compare, classify, repeat, transform, problem-solve and communicate mathematically. This provides a rich picture of children’s developing mathematical capabilities across areas including patterning, symmetry and number.

Importantly, NUMBBA supports assessment for learning by enabling educators to identify children’s strengths, skills, understandings and emerging areas for development. This evidence can inform responsive planning and appropriate next steps, building on children’s existing knowledge, interests and capabilities.

NUMBBA includes the NUMBBA block kit resources and professional learning delivered by Dr Jo Grimmond.

Who this course is for

NUMBBA is designed for early childhood educators working with preschool aged children (3-5 years) in early childhood education and care. Ideal for whole-staff professional learning within Early Childhood centres. This tool can support centres to draw on assessment evidence when developing transition to school statements.

What you'll learn

By completing the NUMBBA professional learning program, educators will develop practical knowledge and skills to support early mathematics learning.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Develop knowledge of the importance and predictive features of early mathematics
  • Build educator confidence and self-efficacy in mathematics
  • Overcome common barriers to mathematical practice in early childhood and care
  • Embed rich mathematical learning into everyday play-based contexts
  • Strengthen intentional teaching and mathematical language in areas aligned to NUMBBA – patterning, symmetry and number sense
  • Build mathematical content knowledge to notice opportunities to enhance mathematics in areas that are aligned to NUMBBA – patterning, symmetry and number sense
  • Develop knowledge of assessment for learning and how to use child-level data to inform pedagogical decisions in practice.
