The Graduate Certificate in Geostatistics and Spatial Modelling from Charles Sturt University is the only postgraduate course of its kind in Australia. You'll gain advanced skills in the collection, integration and utilisation of data for predictive modelling – skills that can be applied across the mining, agriculture and environmental service sectors.

Developed in partnership with the Australian Institute of Geoscientists, this course uses real-world cases studies so that you can see how data analysis and modelling can help drive business success. It's also the ideal step to further postgraduate study in the field.

This course is part of an articulated program of study. Articulated programs allow you to build on your study to achieve the right level of qualification for you.

      Industry Driven

We've developed this course in consultation with Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG), the leading professional institute representing geoscientists employed in all sectors of industry throughout Australia. Spatial analyst are in demand, particularly their knowledge to select and implement modelling approaches that deliver accurate outputs.

      One of a kind course

You’ll be studying the only postgraduate geostatistics course in Australia, and one of a few courses internationally available in this discipline.

      Cutting edge teaching and technology

This course provides interactive learning of state-of-the art statistical and machine learning spatial modelling methodologies. We teach with cutting-edge technology, with a focus on geostatistical applications to case studies in mining, agriculture, and environment.

      Practical, relevant learning

You’ll be provided with step-by-step guidance through foundational knowledge and practical exercises, using open source software and datasets relevant to mining, agriculture and environmental case studies. You’ll also be trained in decision-making processes based on the evaluation and uncertainty assessment of spatial modelling outputs.

      Flexible study

Study 100% online with Australia's most experienced provider of online study, helping you to fit study into your life. You can study at your own pace and vary your pattern (with permission from the course director) to suit your career aspirations.

      Career opportunities

When you graduate, you'll be ready to make your mark in a wide range of careers, including:

      • Spatial analyst
      • Mineral resource geologist and analyst
      • Reserve engineers
      • Precision agriculture consultant
      • Environmental scientist/consultant
      • GIS officer/analyst
      • Agricultural data scientists

      What you will study

For each 8-point subject you are enrolled in, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per week working on assignments and assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, and attending lectures, intensive schools, or examinations. If you are studying four subjects per session, this is equivalent to a full-time job. The workload for some subjects may vary as a result of approved course design.

      Intensive school

You may need to attend an online or on-campus intensive school for certain subjects in this course. These schools usually involve lectures, tutorials and practicals that will give you a deeper understanding of your subject.
