    What you will study

    For each 8-point subject you are enrolled in, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours per week working on assignments and assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, and attending lectures, intensive schools, or examinations. If you are studying four subjects per session, this is equivalent to a full-time job. The workload for some subjects may vary as a result of approved course design.

    Are there options for graduate research?

    While this course does not include a graduate research component, it can provide a pathway to further study and research opportunities. After completing your Bachelor of Laws, you may be eligible to undertake Charles Sturt's Bachelor of Applied Research (Honours), which provides advanced research training and the opportunity to develop specialist expertise in a chosen area. The degree can also support progression to higher degree research pathways, including master's and PhD studies.

    How is the Bachelor of Laws structured?

    Our undergraduate Bachelor of Laws covers all core areas of Australian law, including the Priestley 11 subjects required for admission to the legal profession. The course structure combines core subjects and electives, building practical legal, research, analytical and advocacy skills while exploring contemporary topics. Flexible study options let you complete the degree full time in three years or part time, with as little as one subject per session to suit your workload and commitments.

    What career opportunities are available after graduation?

    As a law graduate, you can pursue a legal career as a barrister or solicitor (with further practical training and admission requirements). You may also find opportunities as a business adviser, in-house counsel, legal research officer, policy adviser, government officer, or in advocacy and community-focused organisations. Many graduates choose careers that influence public policy, support social justice initiatives, or help shape laws and regulations across the public and private sectors. With such a diverse range of career pathways, you can align your career with your interests, values and professional goals.

    Can international students apply for a law degree?

    The Bachelor of Laws is currently available to domestic applicants only. Applicants with overseas law qualifications who wish to practise in Australia should first obtain an assessment from the relevant admitting authority in the state or territory where they intend to practise, such as the Legal Practitioners Admission Board in NSW, which will advise any required study. Charles Sturt does not determine admission requirements for legal practice. Applicants should then include their overseas qualifications and assessment letter with their application.

    Please note that Charles Sturt law subjects are based on Australian law, legislation and legal practice, and are not conversion or bridging subjects for overseas-qualified lawyers.

    What are the available entry pathways?

    There are multiple entry pathways into the Bachelor of Laws. If you meet all the academic qualifications, you may be eligible for direct entry. However, there may be alternative options available through some of our admission schemes, which could include a bridging course, prior work experience, or special consideration based on personal circumstances. You could also score an early offer before you sit your exams via the Charles Sturt Advantage.

    What scholarships are available for students studying a Bachelor of Laws?

    We have a wide range of scholarships available to help with tuition and other expenses - with lots of different criteria, from academic performance to community engagement. Explore the fees and scholarships information, and remember that the best way to score a scholarship is to apply!

    How much time per subject should I allow each week?

    As a guide, you should allow around 10 to 12 hours per week on average per law subject. This includes reading subject materials such as cases, case law and legislation, attending online learning activities or watching recorded lectures on catch-up, participating in discussions and completing assessments or exams.

    How do I actually become a lawyer?

    Completing the Bachelor of Laws is the first step towards becoming a lawyer. After graduating, you'll need to undertake approved Practical Legal Training (PLT) and then apply for admission to the legal profession through the relevant state or territory authority. Once admitted, you can practise as a solicitor. Additional training and examinations are required if you wish to become a barrister.
