Exercise Physiologists need effective verbal communication skills in English for professional practice in Australia.
Verbal and written communication should be in English to a standard that allows fluid, clear, and comprehensible two-way discussions for client care, tailored to the local English-speaking audiences.
Exercise Physiology requires skills to live, learn and work in a society where communication and access to information is increasingly through digital technologies. Therefore Exercise Physiologists must be able to access and use technology and adapt to technological changes, and apply digital literacy skills to support engagement with clients.
Exercise Physiology is a registered profession in Australia. A registered profession is one that has been identified by the government as requiring sufficient qualification and regulation to ensure the safety of the public. Accredited Exercise Physiologists are both accountable and responsible for ensuring safe and professional behaviour in all contexts.
Compliance with standards, codes, guidelines and policies that facilitates safe, competent interactions and relationships for students and the people they engage with in the many environments of practice is required for the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of all.
Exercise Physiology involves physical demands and requires gross motor function. Sufficient gross motor skills are necessary to perform, coordinate and prioritise care. Tasks that involve gross motor skills include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, standing, twisting and bending. Students must be able to demonstrate and perform these tasks consistently and safely to reduce the risk of harm to self and others.
Behavioural stability is required to function and adapt effectively and sensitively in this role. You need to be consistent in your professional conduct and performance. Managing your own emotions and maintaining your physical and mental health and well-being is required.
A range of complex, multi-component or extended client care tasks carried out over a period of time and in a time-constrained environments is required to provide safe and effective practice.
Exercise Physiologists need to be able to analyse and think about complex situations. Consistent and effective thinking skills are required to provide safe and competent practice.
Critical thinking may include the capacity to locate appropriate and relevant information that increases in complexity according to year level/level of practice experience, the ability to critically analyse information relevant to practice and integrate and implement knowledge in a range of practice contexts.
