What can you do with a Bachelor of Human Services?

A Bachelor of Human Services can lead to roles supporting individuals, families and communities across areas such as social services, community development, youth work, disability services, and domestic violence.

Graduates of a Bachelor of Human Services may work for government agencies, community organisations, not-for-profit services or other human services settings. They may support individuals, families and communities through a range of social and community-based programs and services.

Possible career roles in the field of human services include child protection officer, disability care worker, mental health counsellor, drug and alcohol worker, case manager, community development officer, juvenile justice officer, crisis counsellor and multicultural support officer.

Can you study a Bachelor of Human Services fully online?

The Bachelor of Human Services can be studied online, including the mandatory intensive schools. These sessions are an important part of your learning, giving you the opportunity to explore key human services concepts, develop practical skills and take part in interactive workshops and activities. Some subjects also include workplace learning, allowing you to apply your knowledge in a professional human services setting and build confidence for your future career.

What's the difference between human services and social work?

The difference between human services and social work is that human services is a broad field covering a range of support services, while social work is a specific profession with its own professional standards and practice requirements. Human services can include community development, youth work, disability support and case management, while social workers may work with people experiencing complex social or personal challenges.

At Charles Sturt, the Bachelor of Human Services and Bachelor of Social Work share a common first year, allowing you to gain an introduction to both fields before deciding which study pathway to pursue.

How long does a Bachelor of Human Services take?

A Bachelor of Human Services in Australia typically takes three years of full-time study to complete. At Charles Sturt, part-time students may take up to eight years to complete the degree. The eight-year maximum for part-time study provides flexibility for students who need to balance their degree with work, family or other commitments.

Several factors can influence the actual duration of the Bachelor of Human Services at Charles Sturt, including whether you choose full-time or part-time study, your study load in each study session and subject availability. Eligible students who receive credit for prior study or professional experience may be able to complete their degree more quickly.

What majors are available in a Bachelor of Human Services?

The majors available in a Bachelor of Human Services depend on the university and course structure. The Bachelor of Human Services at Charles Sturt currently has six majors: Australian Indigenous Communities and Culture; Child, Youth and Family Practice; Disability; Gerontology and Healthy Ageing; Mental Health and Addiction; and Multicultural Welfare.

Importantly, you do not have to choose a major if you don't want to. You may select a major to focus your studies on a particular area of human services, or choose up to eight elective subjects to develop a broad knowledge base. This flexibility helps you tailor your personal uni experience to your interests and career goals.

Can I apply for credit transfer or recognition of prior learning?

Yes, you can apply for credit transfer if you’ve completed relevant previous studies within the last 10 years. Your application will be assessed to determine whether you’re eligible to receive credit towards your current degree.

While we don’t award proficiency credit for prior experience, relevant professional experience may be considered as part of your first placement, where applicable.
