Advanced Care Paramedics

Are you a Canadian Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) interested in bridging your diploma to a degree?

We award ACPs full recognition for prior learning and clinical experience. You’ll only study 8 subjects to complete your paramedicine degree.

You can study online, in your own time, with one of the world’s top online universities. We recognise your experience - there’s no need to travel to residential schools or undertake clinical placements.

  • About the degree

    Charles Sturt University's Bachelor of Paramedicine has a duration of 3 years full-time study and equates to a 3 year Bachelor of Science in Canada. This is something to keep in mind if you are considering continuing on with a master’s and/or doctoral studies.

    Graduates of Charles Sturt University can enrol directly into a number of our postgraduate degrees including the Master of Paramedicine and Master of Health Service Management.  Those who meet specified requirements can apply to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) as a fourth year of study.

  • Credit package

    The bridging degree is aimed at Advanced Care Paramedics (ACPs) who are licensed or registered and have 1-2 years ACP experience. This ensures that prospective students have both:

    • attended an accredited institution for their ACP diploma
    • a minimum amount of on road clinical experience.

    This experience is imperative as Canadian students will receive credit towards the practical aspects of the course, removing the requirement to travel to Australia to attend residential schools.

    All ACPs who meet the criteria above will receive a standard credit package for the following subjects:

    CLS307 Transition to Paramedic Practice
    CLS311 Clinical Placement and Authentic Learning 2
    IKC100 Indigenous Health
    PHC101 Paramedic Professionalism and Communication

    In order to receive the credit package, you will need to submit the following evidence:

    1. Advanced Care Diploma and transcript
    2. Current registration or licence to practice3.
    3. Evidence of 1-2 years ACP experience (record of employment)

    It is not possible to award any other credit as this is the maximum allowable.

  • Subjects

    Advanced Care Paramedics who receive the credit package need to take the following 8 subjects to complete the degree:

    APS301 Pharmacology for Paramedics
    BMS317 Integrating Paramedic Medical Science
    BMS327 Integrating Paramedic Trauma Science
    CLS300 Advanced Cardiology and Paramedic Practice
    HSM202 The Dynamics of Health Care Practice
    NRS246 Emergency Care in Mental Health
    PHC190 Paramedic Law and Ethics
    PHC200 Health, Society & Paramedic Practice

    On successsfully completing these 8 subjects, students will be eligible to graduate with a Bachelor of Paramedicine.

  • Enrolment pattern

    The bridging degree pathway for Advanced Care Paramedics officially commences in Session 1 2020 (March).

    Canadian students who want to enrol earlier can enrol in the subject CLS300 Advanced Cardiology and Paramedic Practice in Session 3 2019 (November). These students can choose to continue their studies, enrolling in PHC200 Health, Society & Paramedic Practice in Term 15 (January), or to join the rest of the students in Session 1, 2020 (March).

    Most Charles Sturt University online students are enrolled part-time, completing 2 subjects per session. ACP students commencing their degree in Session 1 (March) 2020 can therefore generally expect to complete their degree by November 2021. Students can also study full-time (4 subjects per session) if they wish to complete their degree in November 2020.

  • Fees

    Canadian students will pay the international student rate for their studies will be eligible for a reduced subject fee.

    Students enrolling in CLS300 Advanced Cardiology and Paramedic Practice in Session 3 2019 will pay $2175 AUD for the subject.

    Once students are enrolled in the Bachelor of Paramedicine in Session 1 2020 (March) they will pay the 2020 subject fee for any subjects studied in the 2020 academic year. This fee is $2175 AUD per subject.

    Charles Sturt University reviews its fees annually.

  • Applying

    Students wishing to commence in Session 3, 2019 (November)

    If you wish to start in November 2019, you will apply for single subject study for CLS300 Advanced Cardiology and Paramedic Practice.

    You can apply using our online application portal and commencing an application for "Single Subject/s or Studylink" and then "Single Subject Study".

    If you wish to study the subject PHC200 Health, Society & Paramedic Practice in Term 15, 2020 (January) you can request to add this unit to your enrolment.

    You will also need to complete an application for the full degree (Undergraduate), with a commencement date of March 2020.

    You’ll need to provide evidence of registration / licensing as well as experience so be sure you have fully certified academic transcripts and employment records to submit with your application.

    Students wishing to commence in Session 1, 2020 (March)

    If you wish to start in March 2020, you need to submit an Undergraduate degree application using our online application portal.

    You will need to submit the following evidence:

    1. Advanced Care Diploma and transcript
    2. Current registration or licence to practice
    3. Evidence of 1-2 years ACP experience (record of employment)
  • Critical Care Paramedics

    If you are a Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) with education that extends beyond ACP, you may want to consider applying to postgraduate study rather than directly to the degree.

    Charles Sturt University can take into consideration the extent of an individual's clinical education to determine if they are eligible for a Graduate Certificate or Diploma pathway to our Master of Paramedicine degree.
